Hair Density |
How To Determine Your Hair Density:
There are three tests you can do to determine how dense your hair is.
Test 1: Count Them
You can measure 2.5 square centimetre block and count them but thats tedious and aint nobody has time... unless you do.
Test 2: Take a look
Start with dry, unstretched product free hair. Allow your hair to hang loosely, unplaited in its natural state and look at if from different angles.
- If you can see your scalp easily, then you have low hair density
- If you can see some of you scalp, you have medium hair density
- If it is difficult, or impossible to see your scalp, then you have high hair density
Test 3: Ponytail Test
Smoothen and gather your hair into a ponytail using either a comb or your fingers.
- If your ponytail is smaller than a 50c coin, then you have low hair density
- If smaller than a R5 coin, but bigger than a 50c coin, then you have medium density hair
- If your hair is bigger than a R5 coin, then you have high hair density hair
Low Density
If your hair density is low, it means you have fewer strands on your hair than the average person, meaning that your hair appears to be 'thin'
So?
- Use light products that won't weigh your hair down
- Use mousse to make your hair look fuller.
- Consider using leave-in conditioners and dry shampoos that have thickening agents in order to create appearance of thicker hair.
- When it comes to hair styles, try go simple rounded hairstyles that will allow your hair to fall in place and make it appear thicker
- Try keep the manipulation and styling to the absolute minimum and you have less hair lose
Medium Density
Having medium density hair means you have a wider products and styles to choose from depending on the look you want to achieve.
So?
- You can use mouse and products with thickening agents to give the appearance of thicker hair
- Or you can use heavy oils and butter to give your hair more weight and have it hang down.
- You can do wash 'n goes in order to show off your natural texture
- Braid and twist outs work well if you are want to alter your curl pattern and create more structure
High Density
This means you have more hair than the average person.
So?
- Use gels, heavy butters and oils to hold your curls and/or kinks in place and to decrease the volume.
- Layered hair styles are better suited for high density hair.
- Even though you have more hair to lose, you still have to be gentle and avoid over manipulation and over styling, especially with heat.
It is possible to have high density fine hair. This means you will have to balance your regime and products to suit both these hair characteristics. I'll do a post with tips after this series
