Building a hair routine is important when you natural because it breaks down what looks like a 'a lot of work' into smaller manageable tasks. The process of creating one that works for your hair will require research and trying out new products. Its important that you Understand Your Hair in order to refine your Google searches. This will mean understanding your hair's density, texture and porosity. I have blog posts on what each characteristic is and how you will go about determining which classification your hair falls under.
I have coarse low porosity hair which means my hair struggles to retain moisture but is easily weighed down by products so I try avoid heavy oils like castor oil, unless Im going to wash them off.
Daily Routine
I spritz my hair daily just before I go to bed. This is whether I have cornrows, braids or my hair out. If I have my afro out, before bed I plait my hair into 6 sections so it remains stretched and decreases the likelihood of the ends becoming tangled, which will lea to breakage.
Wash Day
I detangle and wash my hair every week alternating between co-wash (Washing with conditioner only). On the days I use shampoo, I will either do a hot oil treatment or deep condition. The ingredients for these treatments vary depending on the state of my hair.
One days I deep condition, I will pre-poo with coconut oil, wash using my shampoo before applying my deep conditioning or hot oil treatment product. I will wrap it up in a plastic bag and then go for a run in order to generate heat and sweat. Before washing out the product with the conditioner, I will use a detangling brush to comb my hair and get rid of any knots.

Post Wash Routine (damp hair)
For my hair, I use the modified LOC method. I have low porosity hair, so the standard LOC method didn't quite work for me. My current routine for my actual hair is:
I apply my leave in conditioner to each section, comb through from the tip to the root using a wide tooth comb. I then seal in the moisture with my shea butter mix. I seal the ends with a light oil. I braid each section and leave it to dry.
My Current Products:
Shampoo- Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow and Repair Shampoo
Conditioner - OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Conditioner
Deep Conditioner: Dr Miracles Leave-in Conditioner
Leave in conditioner - If you read my previous posts, you will see that I have been using the Cantu leave in conditioner but my 3/4 full tub has gone AWOL (Cry with me!!!) so yesterday I decided to buy the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow & Restore Leave-In Conditioner. Ive only used it once so I can't give a review either than the fact that it smells divine.
Shea Butter mix - Main Ingredient = Shea Butter and coconut oil. I will mix in with a few essential oils but I try out different recipes.
Daily Spritz consists of:
- 100 ml Water
- 100 ml Aloe Vera Juice
- 3 spoons Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream or whatever leave-in conditioner Im currently using
- 1 spoon Avocado oil.
**I hardly measure but if I were to guess, these would my measurements**
Scalp massage
I use it when I am dedicated and go to gym likeI'm meant to *hides*
- Jojoba oil
- Few drops of Peppermint Oil
Massage on scalp till it starts to tingle, then I continue to with my normal washday routine.
Products, routines and regimes are likely to change with every season and whenever your hair starts 'acting up'. Don't make your routine too rigid, but don't fall into the trap of not giving a product or a routine time to work. Unless the product is damaging your hair, try using it for at least a month before tossing it out. Please remember to trim your ends every 3-4 months or whenever your hands start tangling up more than before. My current job requires that I keep my hair in protective styles, so U have opted for cornrows so I can wear wigs when I want to feel fancy. Ill have my hair out this holiday season, so Ill definitely have more time to experiment and review different products. If you plan to do the same, please read my post on Taking Care of Your Hair In Summer.
