Hair Type/Wave pattern
08:25To end off, I'll discuss the most common hair trait in the natural community, Curl Pattern. Even though this is the most common trait, its only useful when it comes to styling (whether you can do a wash n go etc) as well as deciding which techniques to achieve a particular style.
Type 1: Straight hair
Type 2: Wavy hair
Type 3: Curly Hair
Curly hair texture have a 'S' shaped curl pattern (i will look at curl patterns in the next post). The hair isn't as shiny as the first two types due to the orientation of the cuticle.
Type 3A
Shiny, very loose hair
Type 3B
- Medium amounts of curls
- Ranges from bouncy spiral like curls to tight spiral-shaped corkscrew curls
Type 3C
Corkscrew shape with small space between bends
Type 4: Kinky Hair
Type 4 hair is hair with tight coils . Because of the tight coils, its probably the most fragile of all the hair types. Hair is very wit, densely packed and has a cotton-like feel.
Type 4A
- Tight hair coils
- S pattern when stretched
- Fewer cuticle layers, therefore has less natural protection from damage
Type 4B
- Less defined hair pattern
- Looks more like a 'Z' as the hair bends with very sharp angles
Type 4C
- Tightest coils
- No defined curl pattern
- Experiences a lot of shrinkage
- Most fragile hair type
